Niagara Guide Home: Niagara Golf: Golf Tips: Add 10 More Yards to Your Swing

Add 10 More Yards

The key to "Power" is slow, smooth downswing acceleration.

A vicious swing at the ball is not the answer. Too many amateurs try to create power with a quick vicious move at the start of the downswing: They either pull the hands down quickly or lurch toward the target with the upper body. While they moves may feel powerful, they actually rob the swing of its power key: which is the gradual acceleration of the club on the downswing. Please concentrate on these following three things to maximize your downswing acceleration.

  1. Make a fluid, one-piece takeaway, moving the hands, arms, and shoulders back together, remembering that the backswing sets up the downswing--smooth back usually means smooth down.

  2. Maintain your head position until after impact.

  3. Try to make the fastest point in your downswing at the ball.

Practice these Two drills to groove these moves:

  1. SWING A BROOM: Take your address position holding a broom instead of a golf club. Swing the broom back, realizing how its length and weight encourage a slow, full natural extention of the arms. Continue to the top and start down. You will quickly realize that the weight of the broom and the resistance of its head, keeps you from accelerating quickly. Realize, the slowest part of the swing should be the first move from the top, while the fastest part should be at the ball.

  2. FEET TOGETHER: Teach yourself to keep a steady head position, by hitting balls with your feet together. From this stance, you can't mover your head toward the target on the downswing without losing your balance. Keeping your head behind the ball and your back to the target allows your lower body to unwind and pull your arms through impact. If your head slides forward on the downswing, your arms have no leverage and your clubhead speed is lost. Perform these simple drills and you will be surprised with the results.
