Chip Like the Pros - Part 1

Thanks for an email from Beth Page, a budding Golf Client who has progressed quickly by using her Chipping Skills around the green to make up for wayward approach shots, while trying to hit her various greens in the regulation number of strokes.

Beth, has managed to drop her Handicap from 22 to 9, within a 3 month period, (Congrats!! Beth!!) while faithfully using her Chipping Tips, (4-5 times - half hour daily maximum) which she has asked me to print for you, as follows.

Proper "Technique', is essential for success, on a continual basis.

Your feet are close together, approximately 2-3 inches apart, with your knees slightly bent.

The Ball is located directly off your left heel, (right-handed golfers) (reverse for lefties of course-right heel)

Grip the golf club, approximately 2-3 inches, from the bottom of the golf grip, no matter the club, you have chosen to Chip with.

Set your hands, close to your body, and slightly ahead of left center of your left thigh. (for right-handed golfers)

Please Center your weight a bit more over your left leg, at address, and your ARMS, should be "SOFT", not "STIFF" and not over extended.

This Technique allows the sole of the club to contact the Grass at impact and slide easily under the ball.

This gives you some margin for error. When you play the ball to far back in your stance, you may have two things happen.

  1. The leading edge of your chosen club, may dig into the ground, before the ball, or
  2. You end up making contact with the ball, half way up, and this is called a Scull, or low driving shot, which runs, low and fast across any green.

For further help, please contact your Local CPGA Professional or Golf Instructor, for a golf lesson to improve your game quickly & methodically.
