The 8th Annual Hughes Golf Classic will be held on Friday, July 18, 2008

2008 will mark the Eight Annual Friends of Jim Hughes Golf Classic and our fifth one without Jim who lost his battle with Lou Gehrig's disease on January 12, 2003.

This tournament is put on from a small group of volunteers, aided by many great sponsors, and all agree that it is a great day of golf, food and fun - and in doing so - they have raised over $100,000 in donations which go directly to ALS research. We can't let Jimmy's death have no reason and we appreciate your support!

The Classic is held at the Links of Niagara at Willodell, and the day's tentative schedule is as follows:

Registration 9:00 ~ 11:30 a.m.
Continental Breakfast 9:30 ~ 10:30 a.m.
Golf Clinic 9:30 a.m. ~ 11:30 a.m.
Shot Gun Start 12:00 Noon
Lunch, BBQ and Refreshments are on the course
Cocktails 5:00 p.m.
Dinner 6:00 p.m.
Presentations & Door Prizes 8:00 p.m.

This is a fantastic tournament - the golf's great - lunch is a great BBQ on the course - refreshment carts circulate VERY regularly and you'll really enjoy yourselves. The dinner last year was a 7-course meal that was really memorable and there are always tons of great prizes to be won as well as superb items available for the silent auction.

If you can only make it to one tournament this year, this should be the one.

  • ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease. It attacks the nerve cells that control the voluntary muscles throughout the body.
  • ALS results in complete paralysis and death.
  • 90% die within three to five years of diagnosis. However, people with ALS usually remain mentally sharp and in full posession of their senses.
  • As the disease progresses, the person becomes completely dependent - and increasingly unable to communicate their needs.
  • Between 1500 and 2000 Canadians suffer from ALS.
  • 2 to 3 Canadians die of ALS every day.
  • ALS can strike anyone. It can hit any time, regardless of age, sex, or ethnic origin.
  • A person with ALS will require an average of $137,000 in equipment. Nursing care can exceed ten times that amount.
  • There is no treatment that prolongs life significantly.
  • There is no known treatment or cure, although positive steps are being made in research.
